“A Better Slice of Life” Premieres at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema

February 29, 2016

See the journey of people with developmental disabilities realize choice and a chance to follow their dream

Toronto, OntarioFebruary 29, 2016 – Join us for the premiere of “A Better Slice of Life”, a powerful documentary based on the journey of people with disabilities gaining their independence by learning practical culinary skills.

Last year, a partnership between Christian Horizons and Humber College resulted in an innovative nine-month program that combines teaching in-class soft skills with hands-on culinary training and job placement experience for people with developmental disabilities.

The doors will open to the general public at 6:30 p.m. for the documentary screening event.

  • This program could be used as a model in other educational institutions, as well as in industries beyond culinary. Canada's challenge is this - give people with disabilities the opportunity to develop their innate potential and become contributing members of their community.

  • If we are to support addressing poverty reduction for people with disabilities, many partners will need to come to the table and actively participate in the outcomes… not from charity but from a proven business perspective – it makes good business sense.

    - Irene Moore, Area Manager, Christian Horizons

  • This program is important because it offers the students an opportunity to develop the culinary skills to become employment ready. It prepares students to obtain work and to engage within the community, while enhancing their self-esteem and building their confidence.

    - Gina Antonacci, Dean of the School of Social and Community Services
