Province Settles Institution Lawsuit
September 9, 2016
The province of Ontario has settled a lawsuit that involved people that used to live at 12 former institutions during certain dates (see details below). This is a similar lawsuit to the ones in 2014 involving Huronia Regional Centre, Southwestern Regional Centre and Rideau Regional Centre.
This new lawsuit involves compensating people for harm they may have suffered as a result of living at one of the 12 institutions listed in this package. People may be entitled to compensation depending on their status and application that they submit to the government. Compensation could range from less than $2000 to a maximum of $42000.
People who are included in this lawsuit may choose to apply for compensation or choose not to apply; the choice is theirs.
The application process is now open and the deadline to submit an application is February 28, 2017. One application must be filled out for each institution in which the person applying lived. Compensation can only be received if an application is submitted by the deadline.
